Why is Fundraising Chocolates committed to raising money for Special Olympics New Zealand programmes?
Vision: The Special Olympics movement will transform communities by inspiring people throughout the world to open their minds, accept and include people with intellectual disabilities and thereby celebrate the similarities common to all people.
Mission: To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community..
Principles: Athlete centred, locally delivered, weekly participation, by volunteers, and supporters.
Local:
Special Olympics is a voluntary community based organisation offering year round sports training and competition in over 40 towns and cities around New Zealand. Training is organised weekly by volunteer committees for adults. Training and competition for school-aged athletes is organised by Special Olympics, with the help of partner organisations.
Special Olympics New Zealand Staff are working alongside local communities, clubs and schools to ensure that young people with intellectual disabilities - and their parents/caregivers, are aware of ongoing sports training and competition opportunities outside school, like the 47 Special Olympics Clubs around New Zealand.
With 11 sports on offer, athletes can train regularly in their chosen sport (s) and progress from local to regional, national and even international levels if they desire.
Training is organised weekly, fortnightly or seasonally depending upon the sport’s requirements.
National:
Special Olympics New Zealands' National Summer and Winter Games are held every four years and bring together teams representing local committees and schools.
The next National Winter Games will be in Central Otago 2011.
The next National Summer Games will be held in Manawatu from the 2nd to 5th of December 2009.
International:
Special Olympics World Games are the flagship event of Special Olympics worldwide. World Summer and Winter Games are held every four years.
The next World Summer Games are being held 2011 in Athens, Greece.
